History of Our Department:
Our department was established in 1999 by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali UZUN, as he was then called. The academic staff in 1999 consisted of the following professors, as they were then called: Asst. Prof. Dr. Cevdet YILMAZ, Asst. Prof. Dr. Sebahat UZUN, Asst. Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim ZEYBEK, Asst. Prof. Dr. Kemalettin ŞAHİN, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali YILMAZ. The academic staff changes in our department in the following period were as follows:
In 2001, Prof. Dr. Ahmet NİŞANCI, whose position was in the Faculty of Education, was assigned to our department and assumed the position of department head.
In 2001, Asst. Prof. Dr. Tamer ÖZLÜ also started working in the department.
In 2002, Merve Bilgi ZEREN started working in the department as a research assistant.
In 2003, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cevdet YILMAZ received the title of Associate Professor.
In 2004, our department graduated its first students, and a year later, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim ZEYBEK and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kemalettin ŞAHİN earned the title of Associate Professor.
In 2006, Erdal GÜMÜŞ was appointed to the research assistant position in the department.
In 2007, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali YILMAZ received the title of Associate Professor, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sebahat UZUN retired. In the same year, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali UZUN received the title of Professor.
In 2009, Cevdet YILMAZ received the title of Professor and was appointed to the Faculty of Education at Ondokuz Mayıs University, where he served as Dean from 2012-2016.
In 2010, Prof. Dr. Ahmet NİŞANCI retired, and Prof. Dr. Ali UZUN was appointed as the head of the department. Prof. Dr. Ali UZUN currently holds the position of head of the department.
In 2010, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim ZEYBEK and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kemalettin ŞAHİN were appointed to the rank of Prof. Dr.
In 2010, İlter Kutlu HATİPOĞLU was appointed as a Research Assistant in our department.
In 2011, Asst. Prof. Dr. Muhammet BAHADIR started working in our department, and in the same year, Hasan DİNÇER was appointed as a Research Assistant.
In 2012, Fatma DEMİRCİ and Muhammet Akif ÖZÇELEBİ were appointed as Research Assistants in our department, and İnci DEMİRAĞ TURAN was assigned as a research assistant in our department under Article 35.
In 2013, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali YILMAZ became a Prof. Dr. Harun Reşit BAĞCI was appointed to our faculty and started working as a research assistant in our department.
In 2014, Kuttusi ZORLU started working as a research assistant, and Fatma DEMİRCİ left her position.
In 2015, Prof. Dr. Ali YILMAZ left the department, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yahya KADIOĞLU, Research Assistant Serkan GÜRGÖZE, and ward attendant Ruknettin TABAN started working.
In the Spring semester of 2016, Research Assistant İnci DEMİRAĞ TURAN completed her doctoral studies and left our department.
In the Fall semester of 2017, our faculty member Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim ZEYBEK was appointed as the rector of Gümüşhane University.
In 2017, one of our faculty members, Prof. Dr. Kemalettin ŞAHİN, was appointed as the director of Ondokuz Mayıs University Vezirköprü Vocational School.
In October 2017, Research Assistant Harun Reşit BAĞCI, who completed his doctoral studies in our department, was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Turkish Geography in March 2018.
At the end of 2017, Assistant Professor Harun Reşit BAĞCI was appointed as the Deputy Head of the Geography Department.
In 2018, our Head of Department, Prof. Dr. Ali UZUN, was appointed as the Dean of the Bafra Tourism Faculty at Ondokuz Mayıs University, and Assistant Professor Muhammet BAHADIR was appointed as the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Ondokuz Mayıs University.
Yahya KADIOĞLU, who received the title of Prof. Dr. in 2018, left his position in our department in 2019.
In 2019, Fatih ALTUĞ was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Human and Economic Geography.
Arzu BOZKURT serves as the secretary in our department. In 2020, Dr. Faruk AYLAR was appointed to the Regional Geography Department and Research Assistant Halithan ŞEN was appointed to the Turkish Geography Department. In 2022, Dr. Serkan GÜRGÖZE was appointed as a faculty member in the Turkish Geography Department. In 2023, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Faruk AYLAR was appointed to replace Prof. Dr. Kemalettin ŞAHİN, who resigned from his position as Head of Department.
